Frequently Asked Questions
The lock screen doesn't appear when my phone wakes up
Voice Unlock needs several Android permissions before it can replace the lock screen:
- Display over other apps — required to show the lock UI on top of the system.
- Microphone — required to listen for your unlock phrase.
- Notifications — required for the foreground service that watches the screen.
Open the App, tap the warning banner on the Home screen, and grant any permission marked "Required". On some devices (Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei) you may also need to whitelist the App in Battery → Background activity so it isn't killed by the manufacturer's power saver.
The App doesn't recognize my voice / asks for PIN every time
Voice matching depends on the quality of the original recording. Try the following:
- Re-record your voice phrase in a quiet environment (Home → Voice phrase → Change).
- Use a phrase that is at least 2-3 words long; single short words are harder to match.
- Lower the matching sensitivity in Settings → Voice matching if you get too many false rejections.
- Increase the sensitivity if you're getting false acceptances (someone else unlocking).
How do I turn the lock screen off?
Open the App, then Settings → Enable lock → toggle off. The custom lock screen will stop appearing immediately; the standard Android lock screen takes over again.
Why are ads shown? How can I change my ad-consent choice?
Voice Unlock is free and supported by ads from Google AdMob. If you live in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, or certain US states, the App will ask for your consent the first time it launches. To change your choice afterward, open Settings → Privacy → Privacy choices.
I forgot my voice phrase / PIN / pattern
If you set up a backup PIN or pattern, you can unlock with that and then re-record the voice phrase. If you've lost all three, you'll need to clear the App's data from Android Settings → Apps → Voice Unlock → Storage → Clear data. This removes all locally stored credentials and resets the App to first-launch state. Your device's underlying Android lock (system PIN, password, or biometric) is unaffected and continues to protect your phone.
The App drains my battery
The lock screen runs a small foreground service that watches for screen wake events. On most devices this uses negligible battery. If you notice unusual drain, try:
- Turn off "Listen on wake" in Settings → General (the App will then only listen after you tap the mic).
- Disable Smart Lock during night-time hours.
- Toggle the lock off (Settings → Enable lock) and back on to restart the service.
Will the App work after I restart my phone?
Yes. The App registers a boot receiver that restarts the lock service on every reboot. After the very first reboot following installation you may need to unlock your phone with the standard Android lock once before Voice Unlock takes over.
Does the App send my voice to a server?
No. Voice recordings and voiceprint features stay entirely on your device. The App has no backend, no account, and we cannot access your voice data. See the Privacy Policy for details on what third-party SDKs (AdMob, Firebase) do collect.
How do I change the language or theme?
Settings → Language for language (15 languages supported), and Settings → App theme for light / dark / follow system.
How do I uninstall?
Long-press the Voice Unlock icon → App info → Uninstall. The custom lock screen disappears immediately and the standard Android lock returns.
